Safety Precautions
Electroline is safe and effective when properly used. The following
safety measures should be strictly adhered to during the handling,
installation and use of Electroline to ensure the well-being of crew
and equipment.
- Do not expose Electroline material to fire, flame, torch or
lighted match during transfer, storage, and installation. Magnesium
ribbon could ignite upon extended contact with any of the above.
- No smoking in tanks during Electroline installation. Magnesium
ribbon will produce hydrogen gas when in contact with saltwater, and
hydrogen will explode upon ignition with flame.
- Do not allow Electroline ribbon to become immersed in residual
saltwater ballast in tank bottom during installation, as hydrogen
gas may evolve while workers are in tank.
- No smoking on deck during ballast voyage when Electroline is
immersed in saltwater. Hydrogen gas will be vented onto deck during
descaling process.
- No hotwork on deck during ballast voyage when Electroline is
immersed in saltwater.
- Make certain mushroom vents are open and unobstructed for every
tank.
- Only intrinsically safe equipment and machinery should be used
in areas where hydrogen gas is being vented and magnesium ribbon is
being installed.
- Upon completion of descaling process at end of ballast voyage,
do not enter tank until chemist has certified it to be "safe for
men".
